Technically not a project photo, but the orange van symbolizes SITC as much as anything else. I remember riding around with Ben in this van back in the summer of 2006, and this van has been in my life since. Our van fleet has now swelled to six, but this orange van still holds a special place in the SITC heart.
6* DAYS TO SITC 2011!
*Yes, this is the second day of 6 days to SITC 2011. As anyone who knows me could tell you, math is not my specialty, and I miscounted somewhere. Whoops. Don’t let my inability to count backwards from 30 thwart your excitement, though!
Van rides: one of the most quintessential parts of the SITC experience. There’s few things more fun than cruising around Detroit in one of these sweet rides. You’d think that you would miss things like air conditioning and radios, but trust us, rollin’ around with all the windows down is just as cool.
“Went to Glazer yesterday to do a few classroom presentations and hand out registration forms. When we asked if the kids had any questions, one boy asked if he could bring his pets with him to Summer in the City. Caitlin responded, “No, but you can pretend your high school buddies are your pets.” Volunteers, be forewarned, if you are petted by Glazer children this summer, it’s Caitlin’s fault.”
Katie O’Donnell, co-director of Youth Enrichment Programs. Get ready for Project Play!Lone Pine Elementary’s kindergarten classes chose SITC’s Project Plant as their class fundraiser this year, and they raised money through a farmer’s market at snack time. Ilene and I went out there this morning to talk to the kindergarteners about SITC and gardening. The kids were very excited to hear about all the fun stuff that happens in the gardens, and they ended up raising $239.58! We can’t thank everyone out there enough.
(Thanks to Jackie for the photos!)
Spread the word about SITC!
Summer is almost here, and we’re in full-blown recruiting mode. Caitlin and I have been going to high schools all around the area presenting and handing out fliers, and we’re excited to see some new people getting pumped for all the great stuff in store this summer.
But nothing will get people out to SITC like word of mouth. Tell your friends about your great experiences, and then get them out come June 21st.
If you really want to get serious, e-mail emi@summerinthecity.com and caitlin@summerinthecity.com and we’ll talk about getting fliers out at your school, church, etc.
And if you haven’t heard, we’ve got three new carpool sites this summer: Renaissance High, Grosse Pointe North and Latino Mission Society. If you live around these, really talk SITC up! We’re thrilled to be expanding to new parts of the area, and we want as many fresh faces as possible.
Like I said, feel free to email me or Caitlin with any questions about how to get the word out.
The most underrated part of working for SitC?
The strange looks you get while shopping for supplies. The good people at the Eastland Target was more than a little confused as to why I was buying 11 of these giant frisbees. It’s all in the name of fun!

PS: These giant frisbees are awesome. You know you wanna come out and play with them this summer!
