It may be hot in the D, but that hasn’t stopped SITC. We’re out in full force, armed with paintbrushes, shovels and—of course—jugs of ice water. Sun or shade, there’s always work to be done!

(Canine to Five, 2009)
I love this photo because it was a day when we gardened at Canine to Five, a site we had previously painted a mural at.  This shows the strong bonds Summer in the City has with its community partners and the versatility of the volunteers.  This sounds corny, but it’s true! — Liz Davisson

11 DAYS TO SITC 2011

(Romanowski Garden, 2010).
It never rains on Summer in the City, but when it does, we still keep it awesome. This was one of those rare days. The painters from Phoenix moved over to Romanowski for some perfect gardening weather. Even a dedicated painter like me can’t resist getting muddy sometimes.

I’ve used this photo in slideshows for recruiting volunteers, and I love watching their faces when they see just how much fun gardening is. Detroit’s urban agriculture is not your mother’s garden!

(Growing Joy Community Garden, 2009)
It is awesome because it shows the teamwork of the volunteers and how building community is a vital part of the SITC experience.  Instead of spreading out all around the huge garden, volunteers chose to work together and move throughout the garden as one unit.  AWESOME!! — Liz Davisson

Lone Pine Elementary’s kindergarten classes chose SITC’s Project Plant as their class fundraiser this year, and they raised money through a farmer’s market at snack time. Ilene and I went out there this morning to talk to the kindergarteners about SITC and gardening. The kids were very excited to hear about all the fun stuff that happens in the gardens, and they ended up raising $239.58! We can’t thank everyone out there enough.

(Thanks to Jackie for the photos!)

This photo is SITC noteworthy because it shows how hardcore gardening can be!  Gardening is not for wusses - these volunteers removed an unwanted chain link fence straight out of the ground! — Liz Davisson

Wait, goats at SitC? If you hang out at Catherine Ferguson Academy, that’s exactly what you’ll find. Just another reason to join us in the gardens this summer!
